Curing Your Heartburn

May 9, 2010

Heartburn is the regurgitation of the stomach acids and foods you eat from your stomach into your esophagus and to your throat. The human body has a way of preventing a reflux from happening and the one which is responsible for this is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This muscle acts as a valve. It remains firmly close and only opens up to let foods pass through. If this muscle degenerates or is weakened, heartburn or acid reflux is very likely to occur.

Statistics have shown that women are more prone to experiencing acid reflux as compared to men. Women, especially expectant mothers are likely to suffer from acid reflux due to hormonal imbalance and physical changes. Although women are likely candidates to this troubling disorder, the acid reflux symptoms in women are very much the same as that of men which includes, chest pains, indigestion, gas, acidic taste in the mouth and difficulty in breathing.

However, before you go and seek the help of professionals, you need to know that there are several approaches, natural approaches at that, which you can take in order for you to diminish the symptoms of this disease and possibly prevent it from reoccurring ever again. Here are some tips that you might find useful. Read on!

- Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes. Clothes which are too tight, especially around the belly may force the stomach’s acids to seep back up into your esophagus. Wear light fitting clothes, preferably those made from cotton and other soft fabrics. This is a proven natural cure for acid reflux.

- There are also some medicated drugs which are known to trigger this condition. Anti-depressants, NSAID or non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs, medications for bronchitis to name a few are just some of them. If you happen to be taking medications such as these, always remember to drink plenty of water in order to wash them down thoroughly in you tummy.

- Smoking also causes your LES to loosen up and relax. Nicotine is also damaging to your stomach lining, so quit smoking if you want to better your condition.
