Drug Detox Treatment and You

January 23, 2010

It is a scary first step, probably the hardest step you’ll ever take. But when you decide to quit using drugs, when you take that first step towards sobriety, you need to know what your second step is — and it is drug detox treatment.

There are hundreds of drug detox centers near you. No matter where you live, help is close by. If not from a private drug rehab detox center, then from the local hospital. Help is only a phone call away. Once you make that phone call, what is next? Here’s how it works.

First, it does depend on the drug or drugs that you are shedding from your body. Alcohol detox has its own thing, as does heroin or marijuana. This is because each of these drugs triggers different receptors in your system, so of course how they leave your system will be different.

Many people want to detox at home. This is certainly an option. It is not necessarily the best option, for you or anyone else. But here is a little bit more about detoxing at home. Believe it or not, medically speaking, home heroin detox is safer than home alcohol detox. (Remember this is relative — I have seen too many detoxings to think anyone should try this at home.) Heroin detox is messy and very unpleasant, but in general, it is not as dangerous as alcohol detox. With alcohol detox, there is a chance of seizures. It depends on a ton of factors, but the brain is very attached to the alcohol you have been giving it all this time and when you stop giving it alcohol, it is not happy. So do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor, don’t detox at home.

When you get to the clinic, you’ll get asked a ton of questions as they take your temperature and blood pressure and all that. They want to know your vitals so they can be prepared for any reactions your body has to the detoxification process. This is not medical time wasting, OK? You want to kick this habit just once and these people are going to help you.

Depending on the drugs you have been using and the  overall condition of your body, they may give you a mild sedative. You may be given anti-seizure medications, an IV drip, or an enema. Whatever they are doing it is to help make this unpleasant process more pleasant and, more importantly, safe. They want you to walk out of the clinic healthy and drug free.

Getting drug free is the most important thing you’ll ever do. Read up on drug detox so that it won’t be so scary. It is a vital step in living a drug-free life and you deserve to live a drug-free life.
