Four Remedies to Help Control Gout Pain

March 16, 2010

Gout is a condition that is serious and painful. It is caused by the collection of abnormal levels of crystallized uric acid that forms in joints. In the past, gout was often thought to be a disease that affected only the rich. The reason for this is because the average person did not have a lot of meat and sugary foods in their diet. They were also not drinking the large quantities of alcohol that were available to the richer members of society. Not all of the people who suffer from gout live the lifestyle of a historically rich person. Many are considered to have a predisposition to the condition. Also, the stereotype has gone by the wayside, as meat and alcohol are readily available and cheap. Luckily, remedies for gout have come along way.

If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffer from gout, you know that it can be very unpleasant. Your physician has probably prescribed a number of drugs (a common one being allopurinol), and suggested dietary changes. If you still have to deal with the pain associated with gout, or have to deal with frequent returning episodes, there are more natural remedies that you can try that may help. Here are some home remedies for gout treatment that should help.

1) Water. Drink plenty of it. The average person struggles to consume the suggested daily amount of water. If you are plagued by gout, it is even more imperative that you make the effort to do so. Water will help with the toxins by flushing them out. It will also help dilute the uric acid that can be found in your bloodstream.

2) Get plenty of exercise. As with most health conditions, exercise can help tremendously. Loosening up the joints that are affected by gout will help relieve some of the pain. Building up muscle, increasing joint strength, and increasing flexibility will also help.

3) Use ice on the affected area. Using ice helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate some of the pain. You can use a gel freezer pack from the store, a bag of peas, or a Ziploc bag with ice.

4) On the other end of the spectrum, try heat. By using heat, you can increase blood flow. This is not recommended if there is a lot of swelling. Soaking your feet in warm water and Epsom salt will help. Increased circulation can speed up the recovery process.

These are four home remedies for gout that can be useful when you find yourself in pain or are worried about another attack. Medical advice from a doctor should always be the first defense, but these are safe ways to go along with that advice.
