Keeping A Skin Journal To Help Cure Eczema

January 22, 2010

Determining the cause of eczema and how to prevent it may be one of the most difficult tasks you face. Sometimes eczema is caused by direct contact with an irritant or allergens which can be easily determined. Many times, it is not this easy.

Eczema is often an internal immune system reaction to an eczema trigger that may occur days after contact. In these cases, it is not only difficult to determine the cause but it is difficult to determine which of the eczema remedies will work for you. In these cases, keeping a skin journal will be best.

A skin journal will chronicle your eczema journey. You will be able to chronicle your daily activities, eczema triggers you came into contact with, treatments you used, and the progress of your condition. This will all help you learn how to cure eczema on the face, eyelids, arms, or on other areas of your body.

Start your journal by making a column for every day of the week. Make sure there is plenty of room to write in each column. You will be filling in detailed information about various topics. Then, make rows for the following topics:

  1. Moisturizers- which moisturizer did you use? How many times did you apply it? How much did you apply?
  2. Cleanser- What type of cleanser did you use? How often did you clean your skin?
  3. Topical Prescription Treatments- did you use a steroid or other prescription ointment? If so, how much and how frequently?
  4. Oral Prescriptions- did you use an oral steroid, immune inhibitor, antihistamine or other prescription drug? If so, how much did you use and how often?
  5. Natural Remedies- which natural remedies did you use? How much and how frequently? Did you find immediate and/or lasting relief?
  6. Skin Condition- Did the Eczema heal or get worse? Did it spread or show up in new areas? Were there any remarkable changes for the better or worse?
  7. Activities- What were your main activities for the day, did you exercise any? Were you outside very much?
  8. Triggers- What possible eczema triggers did you encounter that day? What did you eat? Were you exposed to new chemicals? Were you exposed to different plants or a different environment?

Recording this information will give you a phenomenal amount of valuable information about your skin. You can take this information to a skin care expert. Together, you should be able to discern your eczema triggers and your best options for curing your eczema.
